Abstract

813,671. Relief valves. MILTON ROY CO. July 23, 1957 [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 23357/57. Class 135. A relief valve having a ball closure member 17 coacting with a seating 16 at the end of an inlet passage 13 is provided with an adjustable loading spring 26 acting through a plunger 25 on a flexible diaphragm 20 which is formed with a depending, cylindrical shroud 21 surrounding the ball 17 and so spaced from the seating 16 that it provides a greater area on which the escaping fluid acts immediately after the ball 17 lifts from the seating. The diaphragm is moulded preferably from a resin such as a polymer of tetrafluorethylene or of chlorotrifluoroethylene. To prevent the ball 17 from deforming the diaphragm and upsetting the relationship between the shroud and the seat 16 a metal washer 22 is interposed between the ball and the diaphragm.
