Abstract

813,299. Solid state rectifiers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 1, 1957, No. 13871/57. Class 37. In a rectifier assembly comprising rectifying plates mounted on at least one insulating spindle, lead-out connections are mounted on one or more of said insulating spindles, and each connection is integral with, and at right-angles to, a strip or strips parallel to the spindle(s), a number of strips of different lengths being in close overlapping contact with one another to form a laminated bus-bar. In Fig. 2, a rectifier bridge arrangement for the full-wave rectification of a single-phase A.C. supply, each arm of which is formed by two rectifier plates in parallel, comprises eight selenium rectifier plates 1-8 mounted on an insulating spindle 9 as, in the positions shown, are the shorter limbs of two L-shaped strips 12, 13, being separated from adjacent plates by metal washers (not shown), and the longer limbs of the strips overlap, the adjacent portions being clamped or screwed together to form one A.C. input bus-bar. The negative D.C. output bus-bar comprises L-shaped strips 16, 17, 18, similarly connected in the positions shown, opposite the one input bus-bar. Two other sets of L-shaped strips, connected opposite one another in a plane normal to that of the first two bus-bars, form the other A.C. input bus-bar and the positive D.C. output bus-bar respectively. Alternatively, the input bus-bars may be opposite one another and the output bus-bars opposite one another. In an embodiment (not shown), in which eight plates are connected in parallel for half-wave rectification, two sets of four and five L-shaped strips respectively are mounted 90 or 180 degrees apart to form the two bus-bars of the arrangement. Alternatively, the strips may be U-shaped, the middle portions being centrally mounted on the insulating spindle, and the arms of the strips forming two bus-bars of each polarity opposite one another and 90 degrees from the bus-bars of opposite polarity. In a modification, Fig. 5, each plate comprises two integral side-tabs drilled for mounting on two insulating spindles 59, 60, U-shaped bus-bars of positive polarity being mounted on spindle 59 and those of negative polarity being mounted on spindle 60. Flat metal strips 70 are mounted on the spindles and bridge the counter-electrodes of the plates.
