Abstract

1,049,981. Semi-conductor diode assemblies. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Nov. 9, 1965 [Jan. 11, 1965], No. 1137/65. Heading H1K. [Also in Division H2] A semi-conductor diode for use in a full-wave rectifying arrangement (see Division H2) comprises two metal discs 40, 41, each having a pair of arms 45 to secure it to an insulating separator 44. A rectifier element 46 has one region soldered to the disc 40, and its other region is connected to the disc 41 by means of a metal bridge 47 having resilient legs 48. These provide electrical connection and also take up thermal expansion. The discs 40, 41 have projections 42, 43 which are of different shape to identify polarity. The separator 44 may be alumina or beryllium oxide. In the rectifying arrangement (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) nine diodes form two three-phase bridges with one set of three diodes being common to the two bridges. Each A.C. phase line is connected to a flexible strip 36 which takes up any expansion due to heat generation. The common set of three diodes such as 16 are connected between the strips 37 and an upper member 31 which acts as a heat sink and is connected to the positive D.C. terminal 19. Three diodes such as 13 connect the strips 37 to a lower heat sink 32 which provides a first negative terminal 18, and three diodes 22 connect it, via a further heat sink 35, to a second negative terminal 24.
