In a centrifugal governor the centrifugal effect of the flyweights is varied by electromagnetic means. Flyweights 54 pivotally mounted on a cage 52 formed on a rotatable sleeve 14 driven by a shaft 16 actuate, through arms 55, a pilot valve 35 loaded by a spring 60 adjustable by means of a bolt 61 screwed in the governor casing 10. The flyweights are magnetized so as to have a pole at their upper free ends and immediately above those ends is located an annular electromagnet 70 which when energized by current supplied through leads 71 exerts a force on the flyweights of strength varying with the intensity of the current and which force, according to the direction of the current, either augments or opposes the centrifugal force. In a modification, Fig. 3, the flyweights 101 are made of highly permeable material and the housing portion 112 surrounding the electromagnet 110 has a depending sleeve 113 terminating in a collar 114 so that when the magnet is energized a magnetic field extends between the-collar 114 and the inner diameter 115 of the magnet and the flyweights have a torque exerted thereon urging them into a position offering minimum reluctance to the passage of flux. Movement of the pilot valve 35 controls the distribution of pressure fluid to a servomotor compensating for speed changes in the governed device. Specification 735,194, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
