Abstract
582,181. Follow-up systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and JOWETT, W. G. May 31, 1943, No. 8646. [Class 40 (i)] In a follow-up system, the motor driving the follower is controlled by a speed regulator, the movement of which depends on the angular deviation of the master member and follower and also on their relative speed, the latter factor being- introduced by the use of an eddycurrent brake. As shown, the sun-wheels 2, 4 of a differential 3 are driven respectively by the control shaft 1 and the servomotor 34 so that the deviation is imparted by the, planetwheels 9 to the sun-wheel 11 of a second differential 12, of which the other sun-wheel 14 is geared to the speed regulator 15. The deviation is also applied to a magnet system 20 which induces eddy currents in a metal disc 21 whose shaft is constrained by a spring 23, so that a deflection proportional to the speed of rotation of the magnet system is imparted to the planet-wheels 27 of the differential 12, this factor tending to return the speed regulator to its neutral position. The speed regulator 15 controls the current in the opposed field windings 30, 31 of a generator G which supplies the motor 34 on the Ward-Leonard principle. If the follower is driven hydraulically, the regulator may be a valve which applies fluid pressure to one side or the other of a piston of the hydraulic servomotor.
