Abstract
810,132. Winding and reeling. STOURBRIDGE ROLLING MILLS Ltd. May 28, 1957 [March 16, 1956], No. 8261/56. Class 83(4). [Also in Group XVI] A collapsible roller or spindle for coiling wire. strip, cable or similar material comprises a shaft 5, a hollow drum surrounding the shaft formed of two semi-cylindrical parts 6, 7 abutting along a plane inclined to the shaft axis, and end plate 8 connected to the part 6 and secured to the shaft 5, the part 7 being connected to an end plate 9 formed with a hole 10, a conical portion 11 concentric with the shaft 5 engaging the hole, and means for moving the part 7 axially of the part 6. As shown, the part 7 is moved axially of the part 6 to cause outward movement of the part 7 by pins 20 on levers 14 mounted on a collar 13. The levers 14 are actuated simultaneously by sliding a collar 18 along an extension 19 of the shaft 5, the collar 18 being connected to the levers 14 by levers 17. To collapse the roller in order to remove a coil 15 the levers 14 are disengaged from radial slots 16 in the plate and moved into a position parallel to the shaft 5. The levers 14 are normally retained in the Fig. 1 position by a spring catch 21 engaging a notch 22 in the edge of one of the slots 16, the catch being released by a pivoted handle 23. The leading end of a wire &c. to be wound is attached to the drum by insertion in a slot 24 extending through the plate 9 to permit removal of a wound coil.
