Abstract
856,108. Winding filamentary materials. FRANKLIN RESEARCH CORPORATION. April 3, 1959 [May 28, 1958], No. ] 1428/59. Class 120(2). A stock winding machine of the continuous snagless stock winding type has two coaxial rotatable drums each with a stock anchor on the end adjacent the other drum, each stock anchor comprising, a tapering wind-on track, a flange tapered oppositely to said track and spaced therefrom, a wind-on rim between the inner part of the track and the flange, resiliently flexible flaps or fingers carried by the tapered flange and extending towards the wind-on track, the fingers being so supported that the free ends will be easily deflected inwardly towards the rim but will exert a greater resistance to the removal of stock outwardly from the rim. The embodiment shown comprises a main frame 12, which includes opposite end sections 14 and a plurality of tie bars 16, 18 and 20, having mounted on bar 16 spaced reel stands 22 which carry cantilever spindles 24 for receiving reels R. Each reel stand is swingable into the raised winding position shown and into a lower reel exchange position by hydraulic means. When in the winding position a pulley 44 on the spindle 24 is in contact with power driven belts 42 for rotating the spindle. A stock guide 50, reciprocable axially, guide the stock s between the end flanges f of either reel until it is fully wound, whereupon the reciprocable drive quickly.shifts the guide from the full reel to the empty reel. Each reel R releasably carries a stock anchor 30 which receives a number of turns of stock s on the quick shift of the guide 50, the stock between the two anchors being severed by a normally retracted knife 56 before the full reel is taken off and replaced by an empty one. In this way each anchor contains both ends of the stock wound on the reel. Each stock anchor 30 comprises a web or disc 60 (Fig. 2) having a hub 62 and a coupling pin 61 for its driving connection with its reel. The disc 60 is provided with a wind-on track 64 in the form of an outwardly tapering flange and a wind-on rim 66 formed by the inner end of the track 64 and a ring member 70 secured to the disc 60. The ring member 70 has a peripheral flange 74 which supports retaining means comprising a plurality of peripherally spaced retainer plates 76 having shoulders 78 overhanging the rim 66. Interposed between flange 74 and each retainer plate 76 is a flexible finger 80 so that its free end overhangs the rim 66 and is rigidly backed in part by the associated retainer plate 76. Hence the full free length l<SP>1</SP> may flex inwardly and thus give way to stock s coming on to rim 66, but only a fraction of the free length, namely l<SP>1</SP> may be flexed outwardly by stock tending to leave the rim. In a further modification the track 64 is provided with one or more peripheral snaggers in the form of resilient pads secured to the track by retainer plates. Specification 832,546 is referred to.
