Abstract
A nickel-base alloy, welded joints of which are resistant to corrosion by acids, has the following composition: Mo 20-35 per cent; Fe up to 15 per cent; V 1.2-2.3 per cent; Co 0-5 per cent; Cr 0-5 per cent; Si 0-1.0 per cent; Mn 0-3 per cent; Al 0-2 per cent; Cu 0-0.5 per cent; C up to 0.25 per cent; W to replace an equal amount of Mo up to 10 per cent. The balance, except for residual deoxidizers, is Ni. When both Si and Cr are present the expression: 2(%Mo-20) + 5(%V-1.2) + 10(%Si-0.2) + %Cr does not exceed 30 and when some Mo is replaced by W, the first term becomes: 2(%Mo + %W-20). The alloys may be subjected to a carbide-coarsening heat-treatment before being welded, by heating to between 1175 DEG C. and 1315 DEG C., cooling to 1150 DEG -900 DEG C. and holding within that range long enough to allow the carbon in solution to re-precipitate on existing carbide particles. The alloy is then air-cooled. An alternative heat-treatment may be effected by oscillating the treatment temperature between values above 1175 DEG C. and values within the range 1150 DEG C to 900 DEG C. and then rapidly cooling the alloy e.g. in air. The Provisional Specification also describes an alloy of similar composition but having a content of V ranging from 1.2 to 2.5 per cent, and a content of Si up to 1.5 per cent. Specification 542,851 is referred to.
