Abstract

809,607. Processing cathodes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 21, 1957 [March 29, 1956], No. 9796/56. Class 39(1). The formation of a photo-sensitive surface by condensation of caesium vapour on a cathode plate 4 is carried out in a vessel 1 having two chambers 2, 3 connected by way of an aperture in the metal member 5. The plate 4 is held securely against the flange 5 by catches 9 of magnetic material which are spring loaded by coil'springs 10 arranged in side tubes 11. Caesium vapour is introduced into the chamber 3 and condenses on the surface 6 of plate 4 but is substantially prevented from passing into chamber 2 and condensing on electrodes therein by a coating of collodial graphite on the abutting surfaces of plate 4 and flange 5. After suitable heat treatment the tube 12 is sealed off. The catches 9 are then released with the aid of the magnets 13 and the plate 4 is turned over by careful shaking of the tube so that the coated surface 6 faces into chamber 2 after which the magnets 13 are removed so that the catches re-engage the plate 4 thus holding the photo-cathode in its operative position.
