Abstract

811,143. Coating by vapour deposition. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 7, 1955 [July 31, 1954], No. 22402/54. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XL(a)] A discharge device, particularly a multistage multiplier, has a conducting electrode 4 and a conducting evaporator 9 extending across the electrode, wherein one end 11 of the evaporator 9, e.g. of tape form coated with antimony, is connected to the electrode, at a point near its perimeter and its other end is connected to one end of a conducting loop 10 disposed outside the perimeter of the electrode with the other end 12 of the loop connected to the electrode, the evaporator, electrode, and loop being in series, and the loop lying in a plane which is differnt from e.g. perpendicular to the plane of the electrode whereby by inducing currents into the loop 10 the evaporator 9 is raised to evaporating temperature to cause material to be deposited on the electrode 4 whilst the electrode surface remains at a temperature substantially lower than the evaporating temperature. A multi-stage multiplier has several electrodes 4, each electrode comprisnig a wire mesh 8 and a series of spaced inclined slats 6 to be covered with the evaporated material, the loops 10 of alternate electrodes being on opposite sides of the electrodes. An external H.F. coil is first positioned adjacent the loops 10 of the second and fourth electrodes 4 to cause evaporation thereon and then adjacent the third and fifth loops. Active material for the first electrode 4 and the photo-cathode 2 is deposited from a ring evaporator 13. The photo-cathode and all the electrodes 4 are afterwards sensitized with caesium.
