A stack 1 of generally rectangular laminar metal rectifying elements fits closely within a trough-shaped metal casing 6 with the axis of the stack lying along the trough and with a thin sheet or film 7 of thermally-conductive electrically-insulating material interposed between the edges of the rectifying elements and the interior surfaces of the casing, attachment means (such as screw holes 8) being provided on the casing so that the assembly may be mounted with one side of the casing in contact with a metal surface, to assist in cooling. Dimples 5 or folds at the ends of the casing 6 are engaged by springs 3 which bear against the ends of the rectifier stack, or alternatively a spindle passes centrally through the stack with a nut on each end, portions of the casing being bent inwards to retain the stack in position. The rectifier elements may be sealed in a synthetic resin, or the casing may be closed by a cover-plate. In the first case the connector tags 2 are left uncovered by the resin and in the second case they project through apertures in the cover-plate and in the insulating sheet 7.
