Abstract

<PICT:0809037/III/1> <PICT:0809037/III/2> A dispenser for viscous liquids such as cosmetics comprises an elongated tubular body which houses a reservoir for the liquid, a rotatable ball retained in a housing at one end of the body and projecting outwardly of the body so as to apply a narrow film of liquid to a surface when drawn thereover, an air passage passing through the body and communicating with the reservoir, a cap which may be fitted over either end of the body, and means for urging the liquid towards the ball by movement of the cap. As shown (Figs. 1 and 2) a body 1 houses a tube 2 containing a viscous marking liquid and having a ball 4 rotatably mounted at one end. The end of the body remote from the ball is closed by a plug 9 having a passage 10 through it. The space between the top of the viscous liquid and the plug 9 is filled by a gel-like material 11 immiscible with the liquid. A movable sealing ring 12 is mounted on a part 13 of the body of reduced diameter and two air channels are provided from the outside of the part of the body between 9 and 13 to the narrow part, which channels are closed when the ring is against abutment 15 but open when the ring is against abutment 14. The construction is such that removing the cap from the ball end of the body sucks the liquid towards the ball, and placing it on the other end urges liquid towards the ball; but during the reverse process air pressures are equalized through channels 16 so that at no time is the liquid urged away from the ball. In alternative constructions (1) a passage from the interior to the outside of the body 1 is provided through the channels instead of through the cap 9; (2) the tube 2 is dispensed with.
