808,991. Electric spark igniters. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., J. May 31, 1957 [July 4, 1956], No. 20672/56. Class 75(3) [Also in Group XXVII] An electric ignition apparatus for use in a combustion chamber comprises an electromagnet a adapted to separate a pair of spring-loaded contact pieces e, f and produce between them either by itself or through an additional inductance an arc discharge, the contact piece e being adapted to discharge fuel supplied by a duct c when the pieces are separated. The fuel discharging contact piece e and the fuel duct c are secured to opposite ends of the hollow iron core b of the electromagnet. The other contact piece f is solid and abuts the open end of the fuel discharging contact piece e. The contact pieces are connected in series with the electromagnet. On closing the switch m the electromagnet moves the contact piece e until the circuit is broken by separation of the contact pieces. The spring d then returns the contact piece e to complete the circuit and the action repeats. The contact pieces are contained in a chamber n having an air inlet o and a flame outlet p. A perforated screen q surrounds the contact pieces and is open at the side adjacent the flame outlet p. The fuel may be discharged from the contact piece f instead of from the contact piece e. The Provisional Specification states that the fuel discharged from one contact piece is nebulized by its impact on the other contact piece.
