1,123,743. Electrostatic precipitators. SVENSKA CARBON BLACK AB. 24 Feb., 1966 [15 March, 1965; 16 June, 1965], No. 8150/66. Heading B2J. In an electrostatic precipitator for separating a mixture of gas and carbon black particles and comprising a main container 16 for electrodes 25 with an inlet pipe 15 for the mixture, an outlet pipe 17 for the particle-free gas and an outlet 42 for the separated carbon black particles, a portion of the particle-free gas is supplied by a fan 23 into an insulator chamber 21 above an opening 36 in the roof 31 of the container 16 through which a conductor 29 connected to the electrodes 25 passes, the pressure of the particle-free gas supplied to the chamber 21 being above the pressure in the container so as to prevent the passage of carbon black particles from the container into the insulator chamber. The conductor 29 is supported by a bushing 27 of insulating material which rests on a plate 30 on top of a cylinder 24 of insulating material, e.g. porcelain. Nozzles 33 in holes 32 in the plate 30 direct the particle-free gas tangentially and obliquely on to the inner surface of the cylinder 24. A filter 20 is provided after the fan 23 to remove the last traces of carbon black particles. The particle-free gas may also be treated for the removal of moisture, e.g. by means of a drying agent or by cooling. The mixture may pass through a cyclone 22 before entering the container 16. In order that any flame arc, which may be formed between the roof 31 and the conductor 29, may quickly be extinguished, the roof has a downwardly divergent metal collar 37. Alternatively, a collar 38 is secured to the roof and an upwardly divergent collar 39 downwardly shaped as a casing 40 is secured to the conductor 29, both collars being of insulating material. Other collar and casing arrangements are described and illustrated.
