Abstract

1,231,307. Gas cleaning apparatus. SCIENTIFIC INDUSTRIES Inc. 14 Aug., 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 40613/69. Heading B2J. Gas cleaning apparatus comprises a first stage consisting of a cyclone 58 wherein gas is fed into a chamber tangentially through an inlet 54, the separated impurities being trapped by a pool 72 of oil, the gas passing out of the cyclone through a conduit 96 to a second stage consisting of an electrostatic separator comprising a housing 101 the interior wall 105 of which is electrically conductive and serves as the low potential electrode. Gas is fed through conduit 96 to the interior of a hollow cylindrical high potential electrode 104 and passes out through slots 112. Liquid and water impurities are vapourized by the high potential and particulate impurities settle on the upper surface of a sealing plug 111. Charged particles passing out through slots 112 are attracted to the electrode 105. The gas is caused to flow through the two stages by means of a pump 14. After passing through the pump the gas passes into a flow dividing means 130 which apportions the flow of conditioned gas so that the gas flows at a proper rate into a sampling device 12. A pre-cleaning device 200 is provided to cool the gas which comes from a chimney 10, the device 200 consisting of a chamber provided with a cooling jacket 212, a pool of oil 208 being provided to trap any water and liquid impurities which may be condensed.
