Abstract

1329907 Purifying I.C. engine exhaust gases TOKYO ROKI K K 16 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970 7 April 1971 (4)] 58438/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division B2] A device for separating electrically charged pollutants, e.g. particles of carbon, lead compounds or heavy metal, from an engine exhaust gas includes a housing 1 having an inlet 10 and an outlet 18. A magnetic unit 50 constituted by a plurality of spaced magnetic elements 51, supports 52 and a cap-shaped metal member 53 is mounted within the casing 1, adjacent elements having opposite facing magnetic poles so that magnetic fields are produced in the spaces between the elements, which spaces form part of the gas passage between the inlet 10 and the outlet 18. The particles entrained in the exhaust gas are electrically charged during their passage through the combustion system, and thus are deflected by the magnetic fields and are attracted to the inner surface of the housing 1. An electrode (65) Fig. 5 (not shown) may be positioned in the inlet 10 to assist the charging process. The elements 51 may be different sizes, their diameters increasing from inlet to outlet Fig. 3 (not shown), and baffles may be provided in the housing 1 Fig.4 (not shown). A surrounding collecting chamber (70) may communicate with the housing 1, and filter material may be associated with the unit 50 Fig.5 (not shown). The elements 51 may be constituted by electro-magnets.
