Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently collect particles from exhaust gas and enable the incineration of the collected particles, by causing a gas-permeable porous metal to carry an exidation catalyst so that a dust collection electrode is provided and by placing the dust collection electrode and a discharge wire in a casing. CONSTITUTION:A pair of dust collection electrodes 4, which are manufactured by causing a gas-permeable porous metal such as a foamed metal to carry an oxidation catalyst on the surface of the metal, are placed in parallel with the flow of exhaust gas in the casing 1 of a dust collector which has an exhaust gas inlet port 2 and an exhaust gas outlet port 3 at both the ends. Discharge wires 5 are provided between the dust collection electrodes 4. These wires 5 and electrodes 4 are connected to a high-voltage power source 6. The discharge wires 5 are secured with insulators 7 on the casing 1. Particles in internal combustion engine's exhaust gas introduced into the dust collector through the inlet port 2 are electrified by corona discharge around the discharge wires 5 and then caught on the dust collection electrodes 4. The caught particles are incinerated by the action of the oxidation catalyst on the electrodes 4 while the temperature of the particles is high. The particles are thus decomposed into carbon dioxide gas and water.
