Abstract
807,815. Transistor amplifiers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 7, 1957 [June 13, 1956], No. 18245/57. Class 40 (6). Automatic gain control in a multistage transistor amplifier is effected by deriving a control signal from the output of the amplifier and using it to control the effective resistance in series with the emitter electrode of the input transistor in such a manner as to maintain the output of the amplifier substantially constant. The transistors used may be of either the junction or point-contact type. In Fig. 1 a unidirectional control current derived by rectifiers 40 at the output of the amplifier is applied to a circuit comprising diode 30 to vary the impedance reflected by the diodes 30 through the transformer T2 in series with the emitter electrode of the first-stage transistor. Fig. 2 shows a modified circuit in which the control circuit is used to vary the resistance of a directlyheated thermistor 50 having a positive temperature coefficient. The circuit may be modified to employ a thermistor with a negative temperature coefficient by returning the thermistor to a point of suitable bias potential. In Fig. 3 the output signal of the amplifier is used directly (i.e. without rectification) to control the resistances of thermistors 50<1> coupled through transformer T2 into a series circuit with the emitter electrode of the input transistor.
