Abstract
807,147. Steam separators. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. July 3, 1957 [July 6, 1956], No. 21026/57. Class 123(3) A device 26 for separating a mixture of a vapour and a liquid, especially a mixture of steam and water formed in the generating tubes of a water-tube boiler, is disposed at the outlet 24 from a chamber 22 formed in a drum 10 by a longitudinal baffle 20, the mixture entering the chamber from riser tubes 18. The device 26 consists of a multiplicity of curvilinear, nested plates, which divide the mixture flowing through the outlet 24 into a large number of thin streams and subject the streams to a change of direction of between 90 and 180 degrees, the plates shown each forming a 120 degree segment of a cylinder. Most of the separation occurs due to centrifugal force as the mixture passes through the device, liquid collecting in the space 16 in the drum whence it flows through downcomers 19 whilst vapour passes upwardly through a scrubber 28, preferably of the form described in Specification 433,270, to an outlet 30.
