[Class 23] A centrifugal separator, for use in a tubulous boiler as described in the parent Specification, is provided with means to direct liquid away from the inlet zone of the drum, by imparting to the liquid a component of motion towards the liquid outlet. The mixture of steam and water passes by the pipes 23, Figs. 2, 4, to the inlet chamber 31 formed by the plates 32, 33, 34 and extends almost the whole length of the drum 24. The centrifugal separators 35 are supported by the plate 32 and each has a separating chamber 41 with a tangential inlet 36 through which the mixture passes from the chamber 31. Each separator has an helical blade 48 which extends downwards from the top of the separator chamber to deflect the separated water towards the annular outlet 43 between the flange 44 and the separator wall. This outlet may have vanes 46, and the lower end of the blade 48 may be tapering. The clean steam outlet 50 is enclosed by a cylindrical flange 47, and after leaving the centrifugal separator the steam passes through a secondary separator 42 composed of a number of corrugated plates. After leaving this secondary separator the steam may be passed through a tertiary separator 62 consisting of plates common to all the centrifugal separators in the drum 24. The flange 47 round the outlet may be of conical instead of cylindrical form, and a number of guide blades may be used so that the inlet is sub-divided. In modifications, the walls of the separators are provided with grooves or rifling to direct water downwardly.
