Abstract
806,402. Vehicle power steering. HYDRSTEER Ltd. Sept. 30, 1955 [Oct. 1, 1954], No. 28353/54. Class 79(5) In a vehicle power-assisted steering mechanism an intermediate section 5 of the track rod is pivotably connected to pivoted arms, one of which is formed by the drop arm 4 pivotally connected at 10 to an arm 11 pivoted to the intermediate section 5 and to a part of a power control valve 13. As further shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the section 5 is connected to track rod link sections 6, 7 and is pivoted at 9 to the other pivoted arm 8 carried on a fixed pivot 8<SP>1</SP>. Manual rotation of the steering column 2 causes movement in the valve 13 of the order of 0.020 inches, such movement being accommodated by relative movement of the arms 4, 11 about the pivot 10 and initiating power steering. The ratio of the distances a, b varies the rate of response of the valve 13 to manual input to the steering gear 1 and the "feel" of the steering. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the arm 11 pivoted at 10 to the arm 4 is connected at its upper end to the section 5 and at its lower end to a part 18 of the valve 13, the other part of the valve being connected at 19 to an extension of the arm 8. In further embodiment, Fig. 5, the arm 4 is connected by a resilient member 21 to an arm 20 corresponding to the arm 11 in Fig. 3.
