Abstract
805,447. Protective cut-out arrangements. MECHANICAL PRODUCTS Inc. Jan. 30, 1956 [IFeb. 7, 1955], No. 2943/56. Class 38 (5) An overload circuit-breaker arrangement comprises moving contacts 44, 44<SP>1</SP> interconnected by a " thermostat metal " latch 40 which normally abuts a relatively fixed abutment 42 and is normally shunted by a switch having contacts 58, 58<SP>1</SP> carried by thermostat metal strips 54, 54<SP>1</SP>, the strip 54 being in the shunt circuit and the strip 54<SP>1</SP> providing ambient temperature compensation. The latch and the strips may be of bimetal or trimetal and the strips have their high expansion side facing adjusting screw 60. Under overload conditions, the strip 54 deflects to open the contacts 58, 58<SP>1</SP> so that the full current is caused to flow through the latch 40 which quickly separates from the abutment 42 and allows the springs 48 to open the contacts 44, 46 and 44<SP>1</SP> 46<SP>1</SP>. With the screw 60 in the full line position it restrains the outward movement of the strip 54<SP>1</SP> so that ambient temperature compensation is provided above a normal temperature and release is delayed for temperatures below normal, but with the screw in the dotted position it merely functions to maintain the desired contact pressure.
