Abstract

804,428. Automatic circuit-breakers. FEDERAL PACIFIC ELECTRIC CO. June 4, 1956 [June 17, 1955], No. 17202/56. Class 38 (5). In a circuit-breaker having thermal and magnetic tripping, the air-gap of the electromagnet is substantially constant during deflection of the bi-metal strip. As applied to a circuit-breaker generally similar to that of Specification 737,604, the ends of the bi-metal strip 48 and magnetic core 50 are riveted at 59 to the moving contact arm 28. The latch 54 is pivoted at 52 on the bi-metal strip 48 and is held against the end of the strip by the spring 56, the folded end forming the armature for electromagnet 50, 58, the coil 58 of which is connected to the strip 48. Heating of strip 48 under overload conditions moves the latch 54 downwards to release the actuator 26 and trip the breaker. Under shortcircuit conditions the armature is attracted to release the actuator 26 before damage to the bimetal strip 48 can occur. The latch 54 normally bears on the end of a further bi-metal strip 42 which is provided for ambient temperature compensation. In a modification, Fig. 2, the compensating strip 42 is mounted on the end of bimetal strip 48.
