805,126. Parachute packs. HATFIELD, J. E. Aug. 2, 1956 [Aug. 26, 1955], No. 24607/55. Class 4. A parachute pack comprises a base and closure flaps forming a container for a parachute and its rigging, wherein a principal flap extending from one side of the pack is detachably secured to the remote side of the pack by quickly releasable means disposed inside the pack but operable from outside, so that on release and swinging of the flap in an opening direction, substantially the whole of the face of the pack is opened. The pack comprises a base 1 to which are attached end flaps 2, 3, and a principal flap 4, extending from one side of the base to the other. The flap is releasable by cone and grommet fastenings, the cones 10 on the flap extending inwardly through grommets on the side of the pack and being secured by rip pins. A sliding plate 30, Fig. 3, covers these fastenings. The other side of the flap is secured to the pack by a zip fastener 33 so that the parachute may be packed while the cone and grommets are secured together, the zip fastener then fastening the flap 4 down. Alternatively, cone and grommet fastenings may be used at each side of the flap, when the latter is centrally divided into two portions connectable by a zip fastener for packing, Fig. 13 (not shown). A pocket 28 on the base contains a barometrically or time-delay operated rip cord actuator. One cable thereof is operable by the wearer to arm the actuator, and another to provide an overriding manual release; Figs. 10-12 (not shown). An elastic line 34 is anchored at one corner of the flap 4 near the cones 10, runs through loops at the other side of the flap, and runs to an anchorage at the other corner of the flap near the cones 10 (see Fig. 1, not shown) so that on release of the cones, the flap is drawn away from the opening face of the pack. A flap 37 attached to the side of flap 4 near the cones 10, is rolled round a pilot parachute 6 connected to the main canopy by a line 38, so that as the elastic line pulls the flap 4 back, the pilot parachute is flung clear into the airstream.
