Abstract
805,076. Titanium production. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORPORATION, [formerly NATIONAL DISTILLERS PRODUCTS CORPORATION.]. Sept. 18, 1956 [Sept. 21, 1955], No. 28476/56. Class 82(1) Titanium is continuously produced from titanium tetrachloride in a two stage process by the partial reduction of the tetrachloride with a 10 to 75 per cent deficit of molten sodium at a temperature below the melting point of sodium chloride, to form a solid, finely divided mixture of titanium subchlorides and sodium chloride, and transferring this mixture to another vessel where the reduction is completed by the addition of the stoichiometric amount of sodium, after which the product mixture is heated to a temperature above the melting point of sodium chloride and further treated to isolate the titanium sponge. As shown, liquid titanium tetrachloride is fed through pipe 14 and valve 15 to the reactor 17 fitted with stirrer 11 and sodium is fed thereto from reservoir 1 through valves 3 and 4 and pipe 8. The mixture is transferred by screw conveyer 19, through pipes 20 and 22 and slide valve 21 to a mild steel sintering vessel 30, the temperature of which is maintained above the melting point of the sodium chloride in the mixture by immersion in a molten salt bath 33 whilst an inert atmosphere of argon is supplied through pipe 28 and valve 29. The sodium necessary to reduce the titanium subchlorides is added through pipe 23. The mixture of titanium and sodium chloride is then heated to 900‹C. for up to 24 hours to promote the growth of titanium sponge and some of the by-product salt may be removed by draining before aqueous leaching to recover the titanium metal.
