Abstract

Titanium di- and/or tri-chloride possibly together with titanium or an alloy thereof are produced together with lead chloride (PbCl3) or zinc chloride by bubbling titanium tetrachloride through molten lead or zinc under inert atmospheric conditions. The metal may, if desired, be covered during or after the reaction with a layer of fused alkali and/or alkaline earth metal chlorides, whereby the evolved chlorides are immediately or subsequently dissolved to form an electrolyte from which titanium and lead or zinc may be recovered by electrolysis (see Group XXXVI). In one example the reaction of zinc with titanium tetrachloride is conducted at 550 DEG C. to form the trichloride and the temperature maintained thereafter until a pyrophoric mixture of titanium dichloride and zinc chloride is produced. In another example the reaction is performed at 750 DEG C., zinc chloride vapour is evolved and the remaining products are similar to the above products but contain also metallic materials. In the examples, where a fused chloride is used, a mixture of lithium and potassium chlorides is employed. The Provisional Specification refers to the use as reducing agents of metals whose free energy of formation is higher than that of titanium tetrachloride and lower than or equal to that of titanium lower chlorides and the reaction with molten metal is not restricted to the method of bubbling the titanium tetrachloride therethrough.ALSO:Titanium alloys may be produced by bubbling titanium tetrachloride through molten lead or zinc in an inert atmosphere. Titanium di- and/or tri-chloride may be produced at the same time (see Group III). In an Example, a temperature of 750 DEG C. was used, as a result of which zinc chloride vapour was evolved and after cooling, the other products were leached with alcohol to leave a metallic sediment containing a brown sponge-texture alloy containing 40% titanium and a similar grey alloy consisting of 76% of titanium. The Specification also refers to the electrolytic production of an alloy (see Group XXXVI) which contains 99.1% Ti and 0.9% Zn.
