Abstract

The reduction of a halide of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, V or Ta is effected by injecting it as a liquid into a bath of molten alkali metal until it is in excess, so that subhalides are formed, and then injecting further alkali metal sufficient to effect complete reduction to the metal. In an example molten sodium beneath an atmosphere of argon is raised to about 400 DEG C. and twice the stochiometric amount of TiCl4 injected through a nozzle in the reactor lid, the temperature rising to 850 DEG C., the further necessary molten sodium to obtain the desired stochiometric ratio is then injected beneath the melt surface, the temperature being kept between 850 DEG C. and 950 DEG C. until the reaction is complete. The sodium bath may initially also contain some sodium chloride.
