790,868. Producing titanium &c. MONTECATINI SOCIETA GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E CHIMICA. Aug. 8, 1955 [Aug. 12, 1954], No. 22733/55. Class 82(1) In the production of titanium or like metal sponge by the reduction of a chloride thereof with an alkali or alkalineearth metal, the reducing metal (solid or molten) and the chloride are introduced in alternate doses into a vessel within the reactor, in which vessel the reduction is conducted in successive thin layers (1-2 cm.) and from which the chloride of the reducing metal is withdrawn continuously as it is formed into a collecting vessel inside or outside the reactor. The reduction vessel has a partially or wholly open top, a blind bottom, and side walls with fine perforations (.5-3 mm.) terminating a short distance (1-3 cm.) from the bottom, through which perforations the molten reducing metal does not pass but its chloride does. The final distillation step may be carried out with the sponge block still enclosed in the perforated vessel. The latter may be made of very thin sheet iron or alloy which may be peeled from the block, or of very thin titanium or other metal to be produced. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a screen 7 is located between the reduction vessel 8 and a shell 6 inside a furnace 10 and the molten salt passes through a siphon 12 into a collecting drum 14 supported within a part 13 which can be raised and lowered and which is fitted with a removable bottom 18 and with a cup 15 to receive the lower end of the shell 6. The cup 15 contains sealing lead which is melted when the parts 6 and 13 are to be connected or disconnected. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the vessel 8 extends into a collecting tank 27 which is periodically discharged through a heated siphon 12 into a drum 14. The vessel 8 and tank 27 rest on the table of a lifting and lowering column 24 and the lower part of the shell 6 is enlarged to accommodate a condenser 22 with external coolers 23. By this means the final distillation step is carried out within the furnace 10.
