Abstract

A colloid mill comprising a stator element and a co-operating rotor element to form a comminuting gap therebetween, the rotor element being mounted on a rotatable shaft, has rotatable cutting means detachably mounted on an extension of the rotatable shaft, the extension passing through the inlet portion of the mill. As shown, the mill comprises a stator 2, 3 co-operating with a rotor 7, 8, the rotor portion 8 being mounted on an operating shaft 10 and the rotor portion 7, which is apertured to transmit material from a central cavity 9 to the comminuting gap, being mounted on a shaft extension 12 which also carries detachable knives 13, 14 located above and below a stationary apertured base-plate 22 having upper and lower serrated surfaces. The stator 2, 3 is axially adjustable by means of a ring 4 rotatable by <PICT:0804408/III/1> handles 6. The knives 13 are mounted in a holder 26 keyed to a sleeve 29 which is keyed to the shaft extension 12. The knives 14 are carried by a paddle-wheel conveyer 27. The holder 26, base-plate 22 and conveyer 27 are enclosed by a housing comprising upper and lower portions 18, 15 detachably connected together. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 2a (not shown), the base-plate comprises upper and lower angularly-adjustable apertured portions having frusto-conical or convex surfaces. In another modification, Fig. 2b (not shown), the base-plate has upper and lower concave surfaces and the knives 14 are omitted. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the knife-holder has an upper outer pointed cutting-edge and the knife has a lower outer cutting-edge. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the knife and knife-holder form an integral unit and the apertures in the base-plate are oblique. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the knife-holders may be disposed radially, tangentially or helically of the shaft extension. In a still further modification, Fig. 7 and 7a (not shown), oblique apertures in the base-plate are each combined with a tooth. In another modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the mill shaft is horizontal.
