[Class 60] A rotary tobacco cutting machine having blades 5 which move in a substantially vertical plane and have cutting edges inclined at a substantial angle to their direction of movement, has sharpening means comprising a grinding- wheel 7 having its plane inclined downwardly away from the path of the blades so that grinding swarf discharged downwardly falls clear of the lower part of the grinding-wheel. The knives rotate round a centre support 4 and pass in succession across a mouthpiece A for shredding a cheese of tobacco. The knives may be automatically fed to compensate for wear as described in Specification 365,997, [Group I]. The cup-shaped grinding-wheel has an annular operating surface 18 and is located at a point where the knives are moving downwardly. The grinding-spindle 16 is inclined at about 2 degrees in a vertical plane. In order that the knife-edges may be correctly sharpened throughout the inner part of the blade is protruded slightly more than the outer part so that there is slight axial projection of the lower part. Owing to the tilting of the grinding- wheel only the left hand, Fig. 1, part of the grinding annulus is effective. In order to prevent the adherence of tobacco juice &c. to the grinding surface the inner and outer peripheral surfaces of the wheel are impregnated with. shellac or otherwise rendered waterproof and water is fed to the wheel interior by a conduit 12, a non- rotary shield 14 serving to prevent splashing. Alternatively water may be directed on to the grinding surface 18 by an atomising device. Instead of water, glycerine or other polyhydric alcohols may be used.
