DEFLECTOR FOR SLICING MACHINES Original Filed April 13, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 30, 1931 UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE JOSEPH FOLK, OF LA FORTE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO U. S. SLIOING- MACHINE COMPANY, OF LA FORTE, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA DEFLECTOR FOR SLICING MACHINES Application filed. April 13, 1927, Serial No. 183,391. Renewed October 23, 1929.
This invention relates to machines for slicing meat and other material in which the slices are severed by a rotary disc-shaped slicing knife, the slices being directed away from the knife by a deflector positioned adjacent the slicing edge.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a deflector of improved construction and operationmounted for easy removal and replacement, the deflector being provided with a support which enables it to be replaced in the exact position of adjustment which it occupied prior to removal.
7 Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification, and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig.:-1 is anelevation of a portion of a slicing machine knife showing one embodiment of the present invention applied ther to;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1, with parts in section; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section 011 line 33 of Fig. 2.
The numeral designates a knife support or chain box of a slicing machine of wellknown construction having a rotary disc slicing knife 11 journaled in a bearing 12 thereon; A bracket 13 is secured to the support 10 by cap screws 1d and carries a stud 15 projecting horizontally from the bracket 13,
the axisof the stud being substantially parallel to the beveledportion 16 of the knife 11 at the point on the circumferenceof the knife directly opposite the stud 15. A slide block 17 ,is mounted 011 the stud lf; and is held in. place thereon by a set-screw 18. The block 17 is provided with a rectangular portion19 having an outer bearing face 20., A deflector 21 is provided with a bearing face 22 for engaging the face of the block 17 and is also provided with flanges 3 for engaging the side edges ofthe portion 19. The
so deflector 21 is'secured' to the block 17. by a along the corrugations and the set screw 18 and gated face having ribs 28 to reduce the frictional resistance to the movement of slices over the face of the deflector. The forward edge of the deflector is spaced backwardly a short distance from the cutting edge of the knife 11-so that after the slices are severed by the edge of the knife they are directed deflected by the ribs 28 away from the knife. The relative position of the edge of the knife and the edge of the deflector may be adjusted by loosening shifting the deflector on its supporting stud 15. After the deflector has once been properly adjusted it is desirable that the adjustment shall not be disturbed so long as the edge of the knife is not materially changed by grinding. It isnecessary, however, to remove the deflector from time to time for cleaning the deflector and knife. This may be done by removing the screw 24 from the block 17 which will permit the deflector to be removed from the block. The screw 2% will be retained in the deflector by the collar 25, as previously explained. After the parts have been cleaned the screw 2% is reinserted in the threaded openingv in the block 17 and the flanges 23 will re-locate the deflector in the exact position it occupied prior toremoval. If the edge of the knife shouldbecome worn the deflector can be readjusted on the stud 15, but readjustment of the block 17 is not necessary at the time that the deflector is removed for cleaning or otherpurposes.
It will be noted that the. position of the stud 15 parallel to the beveled face of the knife 11 will permit adjustment of the deflector along the stud in a direction parallel to the bevel of the knife so that as the deflector is adjusted backwardly toward the center of the knife, it will always bear against the beveled face of the knife at its outer edge.
I claim 1. The combination with a slicing knife, of a deflector for directing slices away from the knife, a support for said deflector adjustable in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the edge of said knife to adjust said deflector along the edge portion of said knife toward and away from the cutting edge thereof, means for detachably securing said deflector to said support, and means for relocating said deflector on said support in a predetermined position relative thereto after removal of said deflector to permit cleaning.
2. The combination with a slicing knife having a beveled portion adjacent the edge thereof, a deflector disposed adjacent said beveled portion, means for supporting said deflector for adjustment toward and from the edge of said knife in the direction of said beveled portion, means for detachably securing said deflector to said supporting means, and means for relocating said deflector on said supporting means in a definite predetermined position thereon after removal of said deflector from said supporting means.
3. The combination with a slicing knife having a beveled portion adjacent the edge thereof, of a deflector for directing slices away from said knife, a support for said deflector, a bracket on which said support is adjustably mounted in a direction substantially parallel to the beveled portion of said knife, a threaded device for securing said deflector to said support, and means for retaining said threaded device on said deflector when said deflector is detached from said support.
4. The combination with a slicing knife, of a deflector for directing slices away from said knife, a support for said deflector having a threaded opening therein, a screw extending through said deflector and rotatable therein, said screw having a collar thereon disposed at one side of said deflector, and a finger-piece disposed at the opposite side of said deflector for facilitating rotation of said screw and for co-operating with said collar to hold said screw in position in said deflector.
5. The combination with a slicing machine knife having a beveled portion adjacent the edge thereof, of a deflector for directing slices away from said knife, a bracket having a stud projecting therefrom, a support adjustably mounted on said stud in a direction substantially parallel to the beveled portion of said knife, means for detachably securing said deflector to said support, and means for 10- cating said deflector on said support in a definite position relative to each other.
6. The combination with a slicing knife having a beveled portion adjacent the edge thereof, a deflector having the edge thereof curved to conform to the edge of said knife and arranged to engage said beveled portion, a support for said deflector, and a stud on which said support is mounted, said stud having the axis thereof substantially parallel to the beveled portion of said knife.
7 The combination with a slicing knife having a beveled portion adjacent the edge thereof, of a deflector having the edge thereof curved to conform to the curvature of the edge of said slicing knife and disposed adj acent said beveled portion, a support for said deflector, means for detachably securing said deflector to said support and locating said deflector on said support in a definite position relative thereto, said support having an opening therein, a stud arranged to enter said opening, said stud having the axis thereof substantially parallel to the beveled portion of said knife, and means for securing said support in different adjusted positions on said stud.
