Abstract
494,472. Rotary cutters. ETZKORN, R. Jan. 11, 1938, Nos. 953 and 954. Convention dates, Jan. 11, 1937 and Feb. 4, 1937. [Class 145 (i)] Rotary cutters for smeary substances are provided with means movable relatively to the cutting knife edge to remove the chips after each cutting action. The cutters may be reciprocated in the holder by eccentric mechanism so that thus cutting edges move against clearing edges held against movement in the holder or the cutters may be fixed in the holder and the clearing means reciprocated. In the form shown in Fig. 6, two cutters are slidable radially in the holder 2 which rotates about the lower centre 5, the cutters being operated by means rotated about the upper centre 8 so that their cutting edges follow the dotted circle. The cutting edges thus move against sharp edges in the holder whereby chips are removed after each cut. In a modification the means for removing the chips is a separate part disposed between the cutters and the holder, the two cutters being integral. When the cutters 1 are fixed in the holder, as shown in Fig. 7, cleaning elements 22 are reciprocated over their cutting edges by eccentric or similar mechanism as the holder rotates. In a modification, the cleaning elements may be oscillated about a centre. The clearing elements may be of hard material to keep the cutting edges sharp. The edges of the knives may be indented.
