Abstract

804,211. Weighing apparatus. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION: Jan. 21, 1955 [Jan. 21, 1954], No. 1829/54. Class 143 [Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for indicating the rate of mass flow of powder or other divided solid material comprises, as shown, a plate 14 on which the material falls at 17 and a unit 15 for measuring the torque about axis 13 due to impingement of material and the weight of material flowing down the plate, the position of impringement and the angle of the plate being so arranged that for a given rate of flow the torque is substantially independent of the height of fall of the material. Unit 15 may control feed means which maintains a constant mass flow. A unit 16 is provided to damp oscillations. Dimensions a, b and c and the value of angle # are given for an example; the plate 14 is preferably curved as seen in section perpendicular to the plane of the Figure. The Provisional Specification refers to the measuring of flow of coke and iron ore; for the latter it is suggested that a second plate be provided on to which the material falls before sliding on to the plate 14.
