Abstract

A mild steel, having a fine grain produced by the addition of a grain-refining agent, possessing good impact properties at low temperatures and which is resistant to creep at elevated temperatures, has the following composition: C 0.10-0.18 per cent; Mn 1.00-1.30 per cent; Si 0.05-0.20 per cent; Mo 0.20-0.40 per cent; Cu 0.20-0.60 per cent. The remaining constitutents are sulphur and phosphorus in impurity amounts, traces of the grain-refining agent, for example 0.05 to 0.10 per cent of Al, and iron. The mild steel may also contain an amount of Ni of from one-half to two-thirds of the Cu content
