An electromagnetically operated pulse counter comprises a magnet wheel P, Figs. 1 and 2, which is rotated in step-by-step manner by the combined action of an electromagnet E the coil Sp of which receives the impulses to be counted and an additional permanent or electromagnet R. The pole shoes of the magnets E and R are tapered to extend in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the magnet wheel P which may, as shown, be rigidly connected to the first numeral wheel a of the counter or may be connected thereto through suitable gearing. Each numeral wheel may be in the form of a magnet wheel.
