Abstract

921,637. Electromagnets. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1959 [Nov. 4, 1958], No. 36965/59. Class 35. [Also in Group XIX] The invention consists in improvements to shoot selection apparatus of the type disclosed in Specification 818,016. The shoot selection members or vanes 38 are disposed between a pair of permanent magnets 30, 30<SP>1</SP> which have N and S poles arranged to provide concentrated magnetic fields parallel to vane 38, as shown in Fig. 3. Each vane 38 carries a coil 40 which is preferably rectangular and the current flowing in the vertical portions of which interacts with the magnetic fields to move the vane sideways in a direction determined by the direction of the current. A further pair of magnets 32, 32<SP>1</SP> and an associated set of vanes 38<SP>1</SP> may be provided as shown in Fig. 1. Preferred constructions of vanes 38 and coils 40 are described and claimed in Specification 921,638.
