Abstract

884,726. Electromagnets; magnets. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 27, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957], No. 37232/57. Class 35. A bi-stable magnetic actuator comprises a tubular permanent or electromagnet 1 with pole pieces 2, 3 which, with a core 4, define annular air gaps in which are arranged coils 6, 7. One or other of the air gaps is bridged by one of two soft iron armature discs 12, 13 which are connected by a spindle 14 and supported by flexible spiders or diaphragms 20 for axial movement. The armature is maintained in either of its two stable bridging positions by the flux due to magnet 1, and change over is initiated by a D.C. pulse through the coils in a direction that weakens the flux at the bridged end while strengthening it at the other. The core 4 has a non-magnetic spacing piece 5 shrunk on it, while the magnet and the spiders 20 are clamped between spacing rings 8, 9 by screwed end caps 11. The core, the pole pieces and the armature have radial slots to reduce eddy currents which would slow the movement of the armature.
