Abstract

802,888. Selective printing. POWERSSAMAS ACCOUNTING MACHINES, Ltd. Dec. 4, 1956 [Jan. 9, 1956], No. 741/56. Class 100(4) In a printing machine in which characters are defined by a series of dots, paper feeding mechanism which advances the paper during the formation of the character is selectively operable upon receipt of a discrete signal to vary the rate of feeding so that the height of the characters is different from normal. The characters indicated by 50, Fig. 7, show normal character height, and those indicated by 51 show the effect of an increased rate of paper feed. If necessary, smaller characters may be formed by a slower feed. The paper is advanced by mechanism driven from a shaft 18, a coupling 19, an epicyclic differential gearing including gears 20-23, and a toothed cage 24. The gear 22 is pinned to a transmission shaft 25 which is continuously rotated by gearing 26-28 and rotated once for each normal size character. The shaft 25 is coupled by gears 37-35 to an electromagnetic clutch 34 which is energized when a change of feed is required. When the clutch is operated, shaft 30 is given a one revolution drive and the cage 24 of the epicyclic gear is rotated to effect additional or reduced rotation to the coupling 19 so as to increase or decrease the height of the characters.
