Abstract

800,332. Cooling exhaust pipes. SPECIALTIES DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, May 9, 1956 [July 19, 1955], No. 14369/56. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXI] Water, or an aqueous salt solution such as that specified in U.S.A. Specification 2,745,806, is ejected from a container 11 by a non-combustible gas under pressure and mixed in a chamber 12 with the gas to form an aerated liquid which is sprayed from a perforated pipe 14 on to a metallic screen 29 distributing it uniformly over the hot exhaust pipe 9 of a crashed aircraft or vessel. A crash-responsive valve 20 allows air held at 3000 p.s.i. in a container 10 to pass, via a valve 21 which reduces it to 300 p.s.i., both to the container 11 and to a metered inlet 16 of the chamber 12 which has a metered inlet 15 for the water or solution and an outlet 17. Reference is made to the use as non-combustible gases of argon, neon, helium, krypton, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and non-inflammable halogenated hydrocarbon compounds which are gaseous under pressure at minus 65‹F. Reference is also made to the use of gas at 100 p.s.i. The aerated liquid may comprise by weight one part of gas to between twenty and thirty parts of water or solution, e.g. one part of air to seventeen and one half parts of water or to twenty-six parts of salt solution of 1.5 specific gravity.
