Abstract

797,430. Ships' lanterns. CARLANDER, J., and ELDOY, S. March 23, 1955 [March 24, 1954], No. 8523/55. Class 75(4) In a ship's lantern having a reserve bulb adapted to be energized when a main bulb fails and in which both bulbs are mounted on a spring actuated platform 4 held in a normal position with the main bulb at the axis of the lantern by a releasable locking device and adapted to be moved by the spring, when the locking device is released, to replace the main bulb by the reserve bulb, the releasable locking device is actuated by a plug 16 containing a heating coil and a metal which melts when the coil is energized by an electric current. The main bulb is disposed in a holder 5 and the reserve bulb in a holder 6. The platform 4 is mounted on the upper end of a shaft 2 rotatably mounted on a base plate 1. The spring for rotating the platform is contained in a box 3 secured to the shaft 2. The releasable locking device comprises a lever 11 urged by a weak spring 12 and having a shoulder 13 which in the normal position of the bulbs engages a pin 14 on the spring box 3. The free end of the lever 11 abuts an end of a rod 17 extending from the plug 16 and when the coil in the plug is energized by operation of a remote switch and the metal in the plug melts the rod is moved by a spring to disengage the lever 11 from the pin 14. The platform then rotates under the action of its spring until arrested by a shoulder on the platform abutting a member extending upwardly from the base plate. During rotation of the platform a cam on the shaft 2 operates a switch to energize the reserve bulb and de-energize the main bulb, and a second pin 20 on the spring box engages a second lever 19 connected by a link 18 to the first lever 11 and moves the first lever and the spring urged rod 17 back to their initial positions. The final position of the second pin 20 is a small distance beyond the axial plane at right angles to the second lever- 19. When the heating coil in the plug 16 is de-energized the metal therein solidifies to hold the rod in initial position. The platform is returned manually to initial position.
