Abstract

513,880. Retractable aircraft &c, lamps. HARLEY, M.C. April 22, 1938, No. 12134. [Classes 75 (iii) and 75 (iv)] A lamp c is adapted to be swung out of a housing n in an aerofoil &c. against the action of springs r by means of a Bowden cable m connected to the end k<3> of a quadrant k attached to, or cast integrally with, the front ring a of the lamp and a pivot boss h. The lamp holder f is clamped by a split collar g in the preferably slit-neck e of the reflector, and the quadrant k is secured to the collar. The quad-' rant periphery is grooved to secure the cable, which extends through the back of the housing. The rim n<1> of the housing is flanged for attachment to a foundation plate p, preferably formed with stiffening flanges p<1>. The quadrant extends through, and substantially closes, a slot in the wall of the housing n and the plate p. The pivot pin i is mounted in angle brackets or an open-topped box or frame q. The lamp circuit may be closed automatically when the lamp has been moved 30-40 degrees out of the housing by means of a switch controlled by the cable m &c. or a mercury switch attached to the lamp. A rotatable operating handle for the cable may actuate the switch or a plunger switch may be actuated by the quadrant, as described in Specification 497,673.
