796,229. Making heat-exchangers. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Oct. 17, 1955 [Oct. 22, 1954], No. 29517/55. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Hollow sheet-like articles such as heat exchangers 1 having an internal passage 2 are made by applying to one sheet a pattern of stop-weld material corresponding to the. pattern of the final passages, applying a second sheet to the first, elongating and welding together the sheets by hot-rolling, inflating the passage, cleaning them out and then drying them. The passage is connected to the periphery of the sheet by a single extension 5 and an inlet pipe 7 which is narrower than the passage passes to the inlet 3 thereof through the extension 5 and a restriction 6, the outlet 4 of the passage being connected through extension 5 to outlet pipe 9 concentric with pipe 7. In a modified form, constriction 6 is omitted, the pipe 7 being of the same diameter as the passage, but the extension 5 is of greater diameter than the passage. After hot-rolling, the nozzle of Fig. 7 is inserted in extension 5 with the broad part 24 blocking it and the narrow part 23 extending right into inlet 3. Pressure fluid is then admitted through bore 30 to inflate the passage and then the nozzle is withdrawn so that part 24 is clear of extension 5. Cleaning and drying fluids are then passed through the nozzle and the passage 7. Specification 759,804 is referred to.
