Abstract
1,259,111. Tubular heat exchangers. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 26 March, 1969 [15 March, 1968], No. 12649/68. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger of the shell-and-tube type the ends of the tubes 12 are sealingly secured in a first tube plate 13 which is spacedly mounted from a second, dummy tube plate 20 which has secured thereto tubular spigots 21 which are a frictional fit in the tubes 12 and fluid under pressure is admitted into the space between the tube plates. The portion of the spigots lying in the tubes 12 are formed into a non-circular cross-section. The fluid under pressure is supplied from one or more inlet pipes 26 into an annular space formed between a sleeve 18 aligned with a further sleeve 14 secured to the plate 13, and a cylinder 22 secured to the dummy tube plate 20, which fluid then passes to the space between the tube plates to ensure no leakage from the imperfect joints between the spigots and tubes 12.
