[Also in Division F4] In a dismountable shell and tube heat exchanger a shell 10 surrounds one or more tubes 23 connected between two tube plates, the first tube plate 22 being held in a rebate 21 of a split ring 20 which is itself held in a rebate 19 in the shell by a cover plate 26, the second tube plate abutting the outer side of part of the shell, and the shell is made in two parts 10a, 10b connected by an expansible joint 13 so that the heat exchanger can be dismounted by first removing the cover plate, moving the shell part 10a towards the shell part 10b the expansible joint 13 being contracted, removing the split ring from the then projecting first tube plate and withdrawing the first tube plate and tubes through the shell after disconnecting the second tube plate from the shell. Two such heat exchangers are shown connected to form an assembly. One fluid passes through the cover plate and tubes of one branch through the elbow 12 and out through the tubes and cover plate of the other branch. The second fluid passes through inlet 27, around the tubes of one branch, through pipes 28, 29 and around the tubes of the other branch to outlet 27. Bellows type joints or 0-ring slip joints may be used or sealing may be provided by a compressible packing between the movable parts of the shell.
