Abstract

988,639. Expansion joints. AVICA EQUIPMENT Ltd. Jan. 21, 1964 [Jan. 30, 1963], No. 3843/63. Heading F2G. A joint device comprises two telescopically engaging tubes 2, 4 connected by a primary flexible bellows tube 10 surrounding at least one of the tube sections to allow the tube sections to move relatively to each other while maintaining a fluid-tight joint, one of the tube sections having ports 18 leading to a compensating pressure chamber 24 defined by inner and outer flexible bellows 26, 28 surrounding at least one of the tube sections. The two end walls 30, 32 of the chamber, which in use are subjected to the pressure of the fluid flowing through the joint, are connected respectively to the ends of the bellows 10, the connection being such that the forces transmitted to each end of the bellows 10 from the respective end wall of the chamber 24 is opposed to that transmitted directly to that end of the bellows 10 by the fluid flowing through the joint. As shown, the tube 4 has a spherical surface 6 which enables the tubes to move over a restricted relative angular path as well as axially relatively to each other. The wall 32 is connected to the bellows 10 by a restraining and protective tube member 34.
