Abstract

985,048. Tubular heat exchangers. HEAD, WRIGHTSON & CO. Ltd. Dec. 27, 1962 [Dec. 27, 1961], No. 46326/61. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger comprised an outer containing tube 1 for a first fluid flow, and means within tube 1 for supporting one or more inner tubes 5 for a second fluid flow, the supporting means and the tubes 5 being so constructed that they may be removed from tube 1 as a single unit. As shown, tubes 5 are supported at each end of tube 1 by support plates 6, 7 and intermediate the ends by support rings 17. Plate 6 comprises a main plate 8 which is a slide fit within tube 1 and a secondary plate 9 which is screwed on to main plate 8. On assembly the tubes 5, main plate 8, support ring 17 and support plate 7 are fitted together and slide into tube 1, seal 13 is inserted and secondary plate 9 is screwed into position. The opposite end of the heat exchanger is fitted as shown in Fig. 1. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), support plate 6 comprises two plates which are bolted to each other after assembly in tube 1. The diameter of the main plate being a slide fit in tube 1. The tube or tubes 5 may be of helical form. Heat exchanger assemblies may be connected in series (Fig. 4, not shown) or in parallel.
