Abstract
794,706. Microwattmeters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 19, 1956 [Oct. 21, 1955], No. 31875/56. Class 37. A radio frequency microwattmeter consists of three equal resistances 1, 2 and 3, each of value R and a suitable thermistor 4 which together form a bridge with a balance indicator 8. The bridge is supplied with current from a source 5 through a series resistor R<SP>1</SP>. R<SP>1</SP> is varied until the bridge is balanced. The mean value of R<SP>1</SP> needed to balance the bridge should be very nearly equal to R. This can be achieved by choosing the thermistor and value of the source correctly. When the bridge is balanced a radio frequency input is applied across the thermistor at 9 and 10. A shunt circuit across the bridge consisting of variable resistance r and ammeter 6 is closed by means of switch 7. The resistor r is then adjusted until the bridge is once more balanced. The current through 6 is then an indication of the power to be measured. The Specification claims 5 per cent accuracy over a wide range of ambient temperature using only a low voltage source such as can easily be supplied by batteries.
