Abstract

669,462. Electrical strain gauges. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 12, 1947 [March 12, 1946], No. 7679/46. Addition to 586,268. Class 37. The parent Specification describes a bridgeconnected electrical strain gauge having a calibrating resistance for passing a current, corresponding to a specified strain, through the galvanometer and an additional network for rendering the calibration unaffected by the initial balancing adjustment of the bridge. In the present Specification a further network, connected to the calibrating resistance, permits that resistance to be of a much lower value than that used in the former case. In one embodiment the calibrating resistance R37 is connected through a switch S to the point of connection of two resistances R41, R42 which bridge the battery B7, and which are so chosen that the potential drop across R37 is considerably reduced, e.g. onehundredth of battery voltage. The calibrating resistance is made correspondingly low in order that the correct calibrating current may pass through the galvanometer. A series of settings may be obtained by connecting the resistance R37 through a selecting switch to one of a number of tapping points on the potentiomater across the battery. The Specification also discusses mathematically the possibility of reduction of error in calibration for different positions of the slider and deduces that the ideal distribution of potential along the slide wire is parabolic. For practical purposes a reasonable approximation is obtained by two tappings to the ends of the middle section R23, as in the Figure, but greater accuracy is obtained by additional tappings through resistances of suitable value, see Fig. 8, not shown.
