Abstract

The porosity of a set acid resistant mass derived from water glass and silicon dioxide, for use for lining pumps, vessels for carrying out acidic chemical reactions, acid storage tanks, &c., is reduced by treating the mass with a hot solution of orthophosphoric acid substantially saturated with an alkali or alkaline earth metal fluosilicate or fluoride and containing a small quantity of hydrofluosilicic acid. The metal salts specified are sodium and calcium fluosilicates and calcium fluoride. The treatment is repeated until the surface of the mass possesses a glazed appearance. Prior to the treatment the mass may be alternately heated and cooled within the range of temperature variations which the mass will encounter in use, so that any surface cracks thus produced are filled during the treatment.ALSO:The porosity of a set acid resistant mass derived from silicon dioxide and waterglass is reduced by treating the mass with a hot solution of orthophosphoric acid substantially saturated with an alkali or alkaline earth metal fluosilicate or fluoride and containing a small quantity of hydrofluosilicic acid.
