Abstract
Fluorine present as fluosilicic acid in wet process H3PO4 is removed by adding a sodium salt to precipitate Na2SiF6, the reaction being carried out in the presence of at least 5% by weight of the reaction mixture of Na2SiF6 previously added to the liquor. The salt may be Na2CO3, NaCl, Na2SO4 or sodium phosphate. The reactants' residence time is preferably not less than 1/2 hr. Silica or a silicate can be added to the acid to convert any fluorine present to H2SiF6. The treated acid is neutralized with alkali to produce alkali metal phosphate(s).
